The Official Turkey Tracker Old Fashioned

It’s no secret to those who know me that I think the Old Fashioned is the quintessential cocktail. Give me a couple ounces of whiskey, a bit of sugar and a few dashes of bitters and I’m set. The wonderful thing about the Old Fashioned is how varied the flavors can be in a drink that is decidedly simple and spirit-centered.

In keeping with the spirit of last year’s cocktail, I thought it was appropriate to again make a variant of one of my favorites and in keeping with the other spirit of last year’s cocktail, this one again features Wild Turkey Rye.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Wild Turkey Rye
Angostura Bitters
Winter Spice Simple Syrup*
A Wide Slice of Orange Peel
A Match

Muddle two or three dashes of Angostura Bitters with half anquarter ounce of the Winter Spice Simple Syrup. Add two ounces of Wild Turkey Rye and stir gently. Flame** the orange peel over the drink, add a large ice cube and slip the peel between the ice and the edge of the glass. Stir gently again, and enjoy.

* Winter Spice Simple Syrup:

Simmer 1 tablespoon whole Allspice berries and 1 tablespoon whole Cloves in 1/2 cup of water. When the water is reduced to 1/4 cup, strain the Allspice and Cloves and add 1/2 cup sugar. Simmer until the sugar is dissolved. Let cool.

** Flaming an orange peel.

    I agree. The old fashioned is one of the best cocktails around. Switch out your sweetener, switch out the spirit and you can have so many amazing variations. Have you ever tried it with tequila or mescal- a oaxacan old fashioned! Yum!

    I am going the cranberry route for my Thanksgiving cocktail with a cranberry smash. Stay tuned for the post.

    Cheers. Jenn
